“Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.””
John 21:19-22 NLT
A conversation between Jesus and Peter, talking about John: “Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
John 21:22-23 NLT
The part that really stood out for me was this:
“What is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
We so often get cough up in the journeys of those around us and we allow jealousy or envy into our hearts, or we get distracted! What God is busy doing in the person’s life next to me has got nothing to do with me… Our journeys are all different! Jesus is inviting you and me to keep our eyes on Him and follow Him alone!
We are called to practice the presence God, but often we are distracted by other peoples “great” revelations and encounters and we get discouraged and we feel like we are missing out, in focusing on that, we then do miss out on “now,” we miss out on the “now encounters.”
A few encounters that I’ve had, or random moments of just becoming aware of His Presence throughout my life has stuck with me.
I was still in primary school, it was December and we were on a family camp at Winklespruit. There was a family that we loved, a mom and a dad and they had two children about our age. At the camp I found out that the dad had cancer. I remember being angry and confused, I ran outside of the hall and found a spot on a little wall where I sat down, I cried and had a “kind of fight” with the Lord. The next moment it started to drizzle, it rained softly, I breathed in the warm night air, I could feel the cold rain drops on my skin and I could hear the waves of the sea. At that moment I became so aware of the presence of the Lord and of His peace and love. I will never forget that.
Then recently we moved into a bigger house since we are expecting a baby girl. Being pregnant, a hectic schedule and moving there was a moment where I was just so tired. There were people helping in our new house, I made a preggy shake and went to sit down, hiding behind the washing machine. In that moment there were tears, I took a deep breath and became so aware of Abba’s presence. Shifting my focus from the physical to eternity. I found so much strength in that short moment.
Often when we go to the movies, I would become aware of Abba’s presence, I will then lift my eyes from the screen to the roof, just whispering a prayer of love to Abba…
We need to practice the presence of God. There is so many moments in-store for you! So many encounters waiting for you!
For a moment, forget about those around you, Jesus is asking You: “As for you, follow me.”
