My wife and I had the privilege to visit Israel in June of 2016. This sabbatical came at the perfect time as we felt tired and empty. A couple of weeks before that we noticed that we were ministering from an empty tank and felt very confused. We started playing it “save” during worship events and slowly moved away from what we were called for by God.
We were walking on the beach in Eilat the one day and I whispered to God, “Abba, how do I survive this? What is my substance or source that will keep me going? .Usually one would expect this Godly encounter of sudden thunder from the clouds or an audible voice from heaven speaking to us as the whole world trembles. But His reply was a powerful whisper in my spirit as He said “My son it is easy, you live by every word that comes from my mouth”. In life we can easily miss these gentle replies if we always try to find Him in the big things.
Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness and one of the questions that he asked Jesus was to speak to the stones to become loaves of bread. But Jesus replied “People do not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” Mat 4:4. Why would he use the comparison of bread? For the simple reason that our bodies can’t survive without food, just so will our spirit stagnate and dry up if we do not feed it with the word of God, the living water from the fountain of life called Jesus Christ!
It suddenly hit me that God spoke EVERYTHING we see around us into being. I realized the importance of allowing His voice of truth to speak into our lives once again. Why is it that for some reason in life we tend to neglect the things we need the most and that is to sit at His feet and listen as He sings His love song over us, His voice of truth. Coming out of a season of busyness, people’s opinions, weird and ungodly doctrines trying to make their way into our lives, the Voice of truth faded away in all that. As the tour went on His voice of truth came through louder and louder and we gained new perspective, received so much healing and suddenly the future looked a lot brighter than a couple of days before.
There is power in setting yourself apart with Jesus on a daily basis. Quite often in Jesus’ journey he went away to spend time alone with His father. Luke 5: 16 “But often Jesus withdrew to the wilderness for prayer”.
It’s there in the secret place where all lies, falsehood, confusion, and busyness takes second place to Gods voice overpowering it all. It’s there where He reminds you of who you are, where you come from, what you were made for, that you will never be alone, to be brave and courageous and to not be afraid or discouraged (Joshua 1:9). God is waiting for you to break away and sit at His feet abiding in His truth. God wants to speak to you and teach you. We literally survive from every word that He speaks. His voice of truth is the guideline to the future, the way forward, the way out of what we are facing. James teaches us in James 1: 19 to be “quick to listen and slow to speak”. It is time that we listen to His voice in our lives and be slow to speak or give a reply.
Recently I started reading a book called “The power of a whisper” by Bill Hybels from Willow Creek Church in America. In this book is a simple poem that Bill’s teacher taught him in school, a powerful prayer that he memorized that changed his life. I am busy memorizing this prayer and believe that God will train my ears to hear his voice.
“Oh! Give me Samuel’s ear,
An open ear, O Lord,
Alive and quick to hear,
Each whisper of Thy Word,
Like him to answer Thy call
And to obey Thee first of all”
Listen to the Voice of truth that tells a different story, the Voice of truth that brings life and life in abundance, coming from the One who died for you on the cross and whose desire is that you will live a life from the secret place, a life of freedom and excitement guided by His every word.
